Thoughts on watching the Princess Dawn cruise ship from my hotel window, Auckland, New Zealand.
From my hotel room window on the third floor,
her presence dominated the view,
a huge white image demanding attention.
There all day, sitting, waiting,
while her passenger cargo spilled out
into the city shops and
onto the harbour’s waters.
At the end of the day
a horn sounded looming departure
and little by little she disappeared from view
behind the terminal building,
to appear again, slowly moving
toward the harbour entrance,
taking with her the memories and hopes
of holiday makers on board.
Across the road where she’d stood,
was a gap, an empty space,
like a piece cut from the view,
as if she had never been,
her presence already erased
from existence.
Time never stands still,
but journeys onward
just like the Princess Dawn.
