This is a poem about the civil war in my country from 1991-2002. Eventhough I was small,. endless stories of it led me in writing this. Freetown is the capital of my country Sierra Leone.

Under-siege in Freetown,
No, we could not go out,
A man killed at is doorstep,
It has begun, no doubt,
‘They have taken over’, the radio said,
‘They want us all dead’,
Mothers watch their babies starving,
Fathers trying to play hero,
Carcasses fed to blood-lust rivers running,
Sweet-talkers turned us against each other,
Complete disarray, no law, no order,
Children now rebel soldiers,
Women now forced sex entertainers,
Pregnant women disemboweled,
No hands, no feet, people amputated,
My nation under civil aggression,
All because of their personal ambitions,
The land cried her petition,
Bombs pelting rooftops,
Blood mixed with raindrops,
Mass graves and earth saturated with dead bodies,
Gunshots making perfect symphonies,
Everlasting are these memories,
Ever-telling are these stories,
Making us accept our differences,
And respect our diversities.
