June 11, 1976, marked the passing of the 35th anniversary of the ill-fated crash of Cubana Flight 445, in which 78 people were killed by anti-Castro terrorists.
Rawle Thomas was one of a few Guyanese
Aboard Cubana Flight 455 which on June 11, 1976
Crashed because of a terrorist attack
Killing all 78 people on board
He was was the smartest of us all
That studied long and hard
And became a delight to our hearts
His academic performance
While at Queen’s College was exemplary
Which won him many accolades
On this ill-fated Cubana jet he was flying
Scholarship in hand
To attend medical school in Cuba
All Guyanese were shocked by the news
Of their plane that tumbled out of the sky
Scattering their bones off the coast of Barbadoes
A barbadian pointed out their resting place
While contemplating the small ripples of the Caribbean Sea
As the anniversary passed
In Guyana, the story was told again and again
Of a CIA link with two anti-Castro Cuban exiles
That bombed the Douglas DC-8
Many of the others that died were Cuban nationals
Rawle was killed at 19
Leaving behind a youthful legacy
Of working hard, and helping, to build a better Guyana
