A poem about on-the -job blues and options.
Sometimes,
It is necessary
Just to escape
From the nervous
Energy that surrounds you.
Busybodies who burn the
Candle at both ends
And then make you feel
Embarrassed when you reveal
To them
Well, you only work
9 to 5, a regular job.
In the meantime,
Your copy machine
Demands more attention
Than your baby at home
Who cries to be nursed,
Loved and sometimes cursed.
The boss jumps over
Your cubicle to complain
About the account you lost
To the competition
And how much that cost
Your company in terms
Of lost sales and perceived value.
In the process,
You lose your train
Of thoughts and your
Ideas fly out the door
Like an angel winging
Her way toward the heavens.
When was the last
Time you ever sat down
To have a decent conversation
With anybody?
Achieving the company’s goals
Made you a hero,
Once upon a time,
But those days are gone now.
Now, you’ll wake up one day
To find your kid is 18
In college
And out your door.
And out of your life for sure.
As an empty Nestor,
You will wonder
How all those years
Flew away like a winged bird.
Now,
You are over the hill
With a big house you own
But nobody for company.
And a kid who no longer
Wants to play with you.
Do you really want to
Spend so much time
And energy on a job
You hate?
Locked away in a cubicle
With a boss who breathes
Down your neck
And colleagues who shout
About getting results?
Maybe it is better to
Catch a plane to nowhere
And sit down for a picnic
With your family, for a change,
And talk about things
Which make you feel happy.
