The following poem is from a collection of 41 written by me to try describing Huntington’s Disease (HD).
In Denial (Soft) I covered “standard psychological denial” where a person is in self denial. However, it is little known that another form of denial with HD exists. Termed “organic denial” here not only is the person not aware of their own symptoms but they are also completely unaware that other people can see their symptoms. The Denial (Hard)
He’d lost count at the number of times,
He’d said where they were going.
She asked again, confusion plain,
Frustration and anger growing.
He counted to ten, and said again,
“We’re going to see the GP.”
She threw down her bag, as she lost her rag,
“Now why would he want to see me?”
“FOR GOD’S SAKE WOMAN,
There’s something wrong!”
“Why can’t you see it,
The signs are so strong?”
She took off her coat,
And sat on the chair.
“NOTHING’S WRONG WITH ME!”
“I’M NOT GOING NOWHERE!”
