The following poem is from a collection of 41 written by me to try describing Huntington’s Disease (HD).

Denial (Soft) tries to convey “standard psychological denial”. Here the person knows something is wrong but, understandably, makes excuses for everything so as to put off the likely confirmation of HD. In the next poem – Denial (Hard) I cover “organic denial”.

The Denial (Soft)

She’s bumping into the chair again,

“Who put that there?” she jokes.

Walks past the rug she burned last night,

When dropping several smokes.

“I needed a new one” she says to herself,

As she’s putting the rug in bin bag.

“At least I know now that the smoke alarm works”,

She laughs as she’s lighting her fag.

The neighbours chat in garden next door,

She can see they are looking her way.

“Nosey sods” she says under her breath walking in,

As she picks up her tea on the tray.

CRASH!!! goes the china as tea tray is dropped,

And the neighbours jump over the wall.

“We’re calling an ambulance, like it or not!”

“It’s everyday now that you fall.”
