The following poem is from a collection of 41 written by me to try describing Huntington’s Disease (HD).

People with HD may take on as many as 5,000 calories a day without gaining weight. Maintaining a healthy weight is key but can be an uphilll struggle especially when swallowing difficulties and risk of choking is high.

Loading foods with calories by adding cream, butter and high fat produce may sound like a dream to some people but it is harder to keep on the weight than you might think!

The HD Shopping Trolley

A Saturday in Sainsbury’s,

She’s walking down the aisle.

The trolley fairly hard to push,

But still she has a smile.

The trolley piled up high with goods,

She looks at what she’s bought.

It’s drawing some attention now,

She understands their thought.

And as the checkout girl does scan,

She gives a funny look.

She wonders ‘how comes she’s so thin?

She ought to write a book!’

For in the shopping trolley,

It’s non HDP’s DREAM.

The chocolates; cakes; and full fat meals;

The butter; and the cream.
