The following poem is from a collection of 41 written by me to try describing Huntington’s Disease (HD).
There’s a book called “Hurry up and wait” wtritten by Jimmy Pollard. It’s a bible for all those caring for HD patients!
The title sums up one of the key characteristics of HD patients in that they psychologically do not understand how to wait anymore. This poem tries to convey how grinding it can be for the carer.
The Impatient Patient
She looks at clock and counts the minutes,
Until it’s half past three.
She knows 3:30 is the time,
She has her cake and tea.
The Carer’s busy clearing up,
The mess made on the floor;
Been rushing back and forth all day,
She cannot take much more.
3:31 and comes the shout,
The anger lies beneath.
The Carer tries to block it out,
And swears through gritted teeth.
3:32 and sure enough,
She hears another shout.
The carer holds her temper back,
THAT CLOSE from walking out.
