The following poem is from a collection of 41 written by me to try describing Huntington’s Disease (HD).

"Perseveration" is described as "the tendency of an idea, impression, experience, etc. to persist or recur, or of an individual to continue a particular mental activity without the ability to shift easily to another at a change in stimulus". In Psychiatry terms it is ,the persistent and pathological repetition of a verbal or motor response, often seen in organic brain disease.’ http://www.yourdictionary.com/perseveration

Here is just one example of perseveration. I have deliberately cut this to three parts as "What"s that thing?’ gets annoying to read after a while. In real life though that question could have gone on for hours!

The Stuck Record

“What’s that thing?” she asks her daughter,

“What’s what thing?” daughter replies.

“What’s that thing?” she asks her daughter,

Daughter’s now rolling her eyes.

“What’s that thing?” she asks her daughter,

Daughter’s trying to hold back,

“What’s that thing?” she asks her daughter,

  Daughter’s primed now for attack.

“What’s that thing?” she asks her daughter,

Daughter’s calm now, counted ten.

“That thing there” she points at water,

Brain’s stuck record spins again.

So very sad. It hurts to be helpless.

    Thank you Catrina and Oldster.

You are so right Oldster. It can be so frustrating for the poor guys when those around are impatient to move on and yet the person’s thought process i still rying to catch up.

One HD patient apparently told a friend that, if interrupted when trying to get a sentance out, his thought process has to start from the beginning again.

It sounds like mentally trying to climb a ladder and having to focus to get to the top. Yet everytime a person comes in with another word/sentance their doing that knocks you off the ladder and you have to start from rung number one again.

However… It’s also as if the person knocked off the ladder takes a few seconds to write down that supplementary word/sentance and when they finally get to the top they respond to not only the initial thing but one or two of the supplementaries. By that time… because the other person has forgotton what they had said the answer doesn’t make sense.

    Frustration all around.
