Hatred is a powerful force, if you let it control you, it will destroy you!

Like the thick frost in the wind

And the ice-cold chill of the rain

Freefalling down in sheets

On the cold black terrain

Clinging

In silent hatred

From the dark abyss of humiliation

And vanquished beyond

An outcast, an abomination

It lingers

Endlessly, searching the boundaries of purgatory

Prowling in darkness for a sliver of light

To escape the stifling claws of raw defeat

And greedily awaiting its one true sacrifice

A tormented soul

To enslave

And rise and torment again

With tumultuous waves of unrest

In the thickening stench of war

The heart collapses, and is silently laid to rest

  • Susan on Jan 2, 2010

Hatred, rage and anger are very seductive. Best is to observe and eradicate.

    Or all light disappears.

  • Juancav on Jan 2, 2010

Great poem;Hatred is a putrefactive matter, that will contaminate our souls and body as well.

  • Geomorphosis on Jan 2, 2010

Some great lines. Dark and powerful.

  • Westbrook on Jan 2, 2010

Nice poem Deb. My take on hatred is it is a natural emotion not totally dislike the emotion of love. It can be a survival mechanism although there are those romantics who would rather not think of it this way. Hatred becomes a problem and can be destructive to oneself and to others when one does not understand it, does not know oneself and does not care to control it. Great thought invoking poem!

‘rises to torment’ As already said, a great write on that stealthy creature that can rise within us and eat at our insides if we should allow it to.

  • Ruby Hawk on Jan 2, 2010

Right on, hate destroys the one who projects it and not the object of hate.

A stunning poem with wonderful imagery and such a strong message.

  • Stickinthemud on Apr 29, 2010

Very vivid in spots, and exemplifies much of the workings of a hating heart. I know, I’ve been there too, as I’m sure most of us have. I like the flow, and your structure is good for the most part. I enjoyed the similarity between the opening and the closing designs. I think though, that if you’d written this in wordperfect or word program your control over the structure would show through better instead of using the submit form here. Overall, really good work. Keep it up and thanks for sharing.

  • Inna Tysoe on Sep 3, 2010

    well done

  • hfj on Jun 8, 2011

Forgiveness is so hard for me to be able to do consistantly, and then when i\’m able to forgive someone, then I have trouble forgetting about it, and putting it behind me. You\’re poem was so discriptive to detail in relationship to the guilt and feeling of betrayal that one feels when hatred rules their lives. I fight with this monster on a daily basis, and hope I can one day forgive and forget. Very good poem and format. Well done Debra.
