A valued vegetable.
Daucus Carota
Beta carotene tapering,
elongated and flesh orange root,
always hiding under the ground,
showing its green tail to the light.
Digging down towards earth’s centre,
hiding crispy and crunchy,
pale yellowness of centre
when boiled and sliced.
My fertile land inhabited
by down growing Daucus carota
tails trying to hide away
from hungry rabbits, me and family
Surrounding oak trees, shadowing
the Daucus bed of crispy water logged
orangeness, ending up grated, sliced, mashed or chopped, helping peer into the dark of the night.
My Eurasian plant
flowers, attracting wasps
hiding its orange flesh
in the ground.
