We least expect

As they undertake
Their grueling task
Pleasant fantasies
May rush
Through their minds

These athletes
May shut out
Their great efforts
That put stress
On their bodies
They endure, relying
On their waking consciousness

They may visualize themselves
Having a warm bath
Once the race
Is completed
Followed by a sumptuous
Meal
With lots of cold water
And a glass of wine

Others may see
Themselves floating
Down the River Thames
Enjoying cool breeze
While listening
To the strings of soft music
And enjoying the moment
With a loved one

These subjective responses
Are happy
They look forward to
Vivid visual
And auditory imagery
In anticipation of the future
- – -
These highs
Are achievable
Without using
Alcohol or drugs
And are opposite
To those that experience
Fantasies of guilt
