According to recent interviews of authors on the life of Vincent Van Gogh, they argued that the legend that this famous painter died at his own hands were false
and suggested that it was more likely due to thugs.

Vincent Van Gogh (1853 – 1890)

Suffered from anxiety

He was dogged with mental illness

Throughout his rather short life

- – -

This remarkable Dutch painter

Was a Post-Impressionist

In July 1890, he died

Under suspicious circumstances

- – -

Van Gogh, the son of a pastor

Who was fluent

In Dutch, German, French

And English

Painted thousands

Of paintings

- – -

His works were filled with blithe

And callous scenes

In short brush strokes

There was a certain lucidity

About them

He fused form with content

- – -

Examples were seen

In Starry Night, Cafe Terrace at Night

Starry Night Over the Rhone

Two Cypressess, Sunflowers

And First Version Irises

- – -

Legend has it

That Van Gogh committed suicide

By a self inflicted wound with a gun

After 10 years of research

Two authors of his life story

Challenged that assertion

- – -

Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith

Argued that it would have been unlikely

For Van Gogh to obtain a gun

Having been released

From a mental asylum

And walking more than a mile

Over difficult terrain

To inflict his fatal wound

- – -

Their evidence showed

That he most likely died at the hands

Of thugs who tormented him

They dismissed claims

That his last painting

Wheat Field With Crows

Was remorse

Very interesting perspective on his life. It’s a shame he left this world too soon. No doubt he had so much more to share.

A rather brilliant and eccentric man.

Yes, maybe finally the truth about how he died will be revealed. Very well written and excellent choice of images of his famous paintings.

SUPERB POETRY – A WONDERFUL THEME.
Have you ever been to Arles in France, where Van Gogh spent his last days – in his house, his favourite cafe, the hospital? I’ve visited all these places and they have given me such a mental image of this genius artist. Thanks for this. AND THANKS FOR THE AMAZING IMAGES.

You did an excellent write up about Van Gogh. I had no idea that he died so young or that he had mental problems. He was really talented.
