Life came from the dirt.

First…
The turning over of the soil…
Then picking out the rocks
Then planting and watering the seeds…

Days later
Green shoots pushed up
Reaching for the sun
Drinking in water from the garden hose…

The sun hot on his back
The soil cool under his bare feet
As he squatted
A wicker basket beside him

To harvest
Tomatoes and cucumbers
Collard greens and string beans
Squash and green peppers and potatoes

That was before the Father died
And the Mother sold the land
And moved away…
Now he lives in an apartment

The End

A sad tale – now he eats supermarket vegetables and has no connection with the land.
