Animal Farm could be enjoyed in many ways. Discover this in this article.
‘Animal Farm’ is a study on human behaviour. It’s about avarice, shown by the pigs and humans and friendship shown by characters like Benjamin, Boxer and Clover. Both the pigs and humans show their greed by taking the produce of their animals and not taking care of them properly. Pigs used to be killed for their meat but when the humans were expelled and pigs started to rule the farm, they became similar to humans. This is because pigs were no longer killed. Just like humans they no longer produced anything. They refused to allow the other animals to make use of any of their products but exploited them for their own needs. The pigs also used Squealer, a great speaker, to equivocate the animals so as to confuse them and remain faithful to their leader, Napoleon. Friendship is also a key factor seen in ‘Animal Farm’. Although Benjamin never showed enthusiasm in anything happening on the farm (even during the Rebellion), his emotions exploded when he realised that Boxer was going to be taken to the knacker. This showed his hidden sympathy for Boxer. Clover, which represents ‘Mother Russia’, is friendly with all the animals especially with Boxer. She is regarded as a mother as she always encourages the other animals during difficulties. However, the pigs lied to her as they didn’t cure her husband, Boxer, but killed him for money. By this, Orwell wanted to emphasise that Stalin had exploited Mother Russia with his wrong and greedy deeds.
In order for a reader to understand these different levels, he has to read the story more than once. Orwell managed to merge hidden meanings in a farmyard story containing a simple diction. In fact, Orwell hated vague, indirect and strong language as according to him this could corrupt and manipulate the mind just like Communists used to do.
