The effects of divorce on a child.

She looked at her dad, then turned away
As the words he said left in her dismay
“You can come and visit me whenever you want too”

“What was he talking about ?”
The little girl thought
Dads’ are yours forever
They don’t go away!

But he did drive away, into his new life
Leaving behind his daughter and wife
His son he would keep, because they needed their fathers
He now had three new daughters, plus their mother

The little girl had been given a new brother and sister
But the pain from the divorce brought sadness that she’d never known
So she built up a wall and remained behind it
Never letting anyone reach her, standing steadfast and alone

A new baby sister would come along
And the little girl loved her
It helped her push away the pain that remained
Looking after the baby would help keep her strong

As the years passed and she grew into a young woman
She was strong and proud of who she’d become
She’d survived a divorce that almost killed her
She understood what happens between a woman and a man

She still loved her father as all of those years passed
And she realized that he loved her all along to
They rebuilt their friendship and grew closer each day
And their love would be forever, even after he passed away

I knew a divorce would be quite rough on all parties involved but now I know after reading your poem how devastating it really is by telling it through a child’s eyes and heart. Bless you Karen for opening your heart and soul for us to see. Keep going, you have found your niche.
