In loving memory of lives lost due to war.

You remember wearing his boots.
His uniform as a child.
What it felt like to have him in your presence.
You’d think you’d miss that feeling cause you were only six when he was around.
You saw him put on that uniform and kiss his wife and daughter as he headed off to drill.
You remember being on his shoulders while he watched his only daughter play softball.
You were always rooting for your sister and god sister.

To you he could do no wrong.
You never understood what war he fought but knew deep down you wanted to be just like him.
So there lies three dog tags around your neck.
You understand now….what war really means.
What war now means is holding onto that person knowing it could be the last time you see them.
You hold them tighter.
Not fight as much when there’s a small fight.
You hold onto every little thing you can of them.
And when that flag is at half stack you raise your hand and salute.
Cause now at 20 you understand and remember saying goodbye to a man who gave that sacrifice for his family and friends.
You remembering hearing he was gone.
You could only imagine how it all went down.
How you wish more than anything you had, had one last time to hug him tight but he came home.
But you know deep down if he hadn’t made it home….you know God must have been needing another hero.

Cause you remember being in that uniform ten times too big.
Watching him walk out that door as he’d solute you goodbye and hug you tight.
Didn’t realize what war he fought than….
But you see it now.
What it does to the family.
Just waiting…….for that call.
That call to say to go.
They’ll hug you close and say they love you as they wave goodbye as they get on that plane.
Your hoping they know just how much you love them.
In a friends eyes, a family eyes, a lover eyes….we know your leaving us as a “hero”.
Whether you come home or not.
We are hoping your the reason you keep going.
So put up that flag higher than we ever have.
We hold onto the memories of you.
Whether a friend, a lover, a best friend we keep apart of you with us.
Whether we see what you do over seas…..we’re looking at the same moon.
We’re waking up to you on our minds.

In that we don’t say while you wave goodbye.
All we pray for is for your safety home.
Our angel, our hero.
We know God must be watching over you.
Either way you’ll come home to us a hero.
So i hold onto those dog tags tighter.
Hoping you’ll come home to us.
Whether a class mate your still a fallen soldier in our eyes.
And when those gun shot in memory of you you’ll still be thinking “God must have wanted you home.”
Whether you know it or not your still in our prayers.
You still cross my mind.

I hold tight to the memories each of you hold in me.
I don’t show it.
I don’t always say it.
But you’ll cross my mind.
I jump everytime they say we’ve lost another solider and i’m hoping it’s one i don’t know.
I know you’ll come home either way.
You do this for our country.
To protect us.
To protect these fields we have.
Just know no matter what you’ll be in my heart.
On my brain.
I know we will be looking at the same sun and moon.
Just know I’m blessed to have you in my life.
Or for some of you to have had you in my life.
Your memory shall never die.

A soldiers prayer is to never be forgotten.
And to die protecting what they know.
Just know I’ll always protect who you were and what you meant.
You’ll never be forgotten.
For some of you I’m closer to.
I know what it’s like to wake up to you.
To kiss you.
To say i love you to.
You’ve printed something on my heart and i cannot change that.
I’ll always keep apart of you in the palm of my hand.
