Fear of the self. The self is a reflection of the truth which, ironically, is what the writer is afraid of facing.
Iam afraid of myself.
Iam scared because I can’t face myself.
Iam frightened of myself
Because I cannot see my back.
Yet no one can tell me anything
About myself better than I.
Not all the seers
Because they see me
The way they want to see me.
Not any of the palmists
Because they need to first extricate
The speck in their own eye;
Not all the mirrors
Because they always reveal
The reverse side of me.
And yet I must remove
The log in my eye
To enable me remove the dust
On the face of the mirror.
Iam frightened of myself
Because, try as I can,
I cannot know beyond the point
My mother hatched me.
