Isn’t it so annoying when you are trying to sleep and are kept awake by a drip?

Image via Wikipedia

*

I lay in my bed awaiting sleep

Aware that all was not well.

Sounds which were usually silent at night

Filled me with dread I could not dispel.

Drip, drip, drip.

*

I rose once more to tighten the taps,

A deed which so far proved in vain,

But still there was that worrying noise

And it was causing me so much strain.

Drip, drip, drip.

*

For the umpteenth time I jumped from my bed

Determined to find the source.

I tested the shower and both bath taps

But didn’t dare apply too much force.

Drip, drip, drip.

*

I then plugged my ears then covered my head,

And tried hard to concentrate my mind

On getting some of my much needed sleep,

But inevitably no peace could I find.

Drip, drip, drip.

*

Then as the early morning light appeared

I rose wearily, looking haggard and wan,

Worried as the sounds were much louder now

When I turned the sink taps full on.

Drip, drip, drip.

*

In despair I listened to the pipes,

Then to the wall I pressed my ear.

There it was that dreaded sound,

Loud enough for everyone to hear.

Drip, drip, drip.

*

I rushed down to the telephone

For a plumber I was sorely in need.

I had visions of walls being knocked through

If the repair was going to succeed.

Drip, drip, drip.

*

At last my knight in shining armour arrived

And in two ticks the source he did find.

A quick change of cartridge dispelled all my stress

And that night I regained peace of mind.

  • Jimmy Shilaho on Feb 3, 2011

This is very funny. I know how nagging those drips can be, believe me, they can drive away your sleep for a long long time!

  • Brewed Coffee on Feb 3, 2011

The dripping sound gets magnified in the silence and that could be annoying. I sometimes experience that. Good for you it was just a minor fix :-)

  • mtrguanlao on Feb 3, 2011

  • LadyElena on Feb 3, 2011

I know that feeling. Anytime, I hear a little drip, I have to stop what i am doing and close the taps tighter.

Beautifully written and I’m glad you now have peace of mind.

  • Kate Smedley on Feb 3, 2011

Lol, I had a night like this the other night, wonderfully captured Christine, I hope you managed to sleep afterwards!

  • J M Lennox on Feb 3, 2011

We just moved into a new residence and hubby just changed all the \’\'tap washers and valves\’\’ (what we call them here) to get rid of all the \’\'drips\’\’. Lol – these knights in shining armour don’t have to do much to earn their titles these days.

  • Mr Ghaz on Feb 3, 2011

:) wow! this one cool..wonderful and ‘extremely’ lovely poem. lov-it so much :)

  • Larry Fish on Feb 3, 2011

Great writing Christine, one of your best. Taking a bad situation and making it humorous. I loved it.

  • Betty Carew on Feb 3, 2011

Excellent poem Christine. You have captured my imagination again while I read. I could just see you tossing and turning. When I hear a drip, I just put a cloth in the sink and it softens the sound but it appears you had a bigger problem than that lol. Glad to hear you got it fixed. Great poem Christine.

  • guraynsj on Feb 3, 2011

    Thanks for the nice poem.

  • Diane Ziomek on Feb 3, 2011

Great poem Christine! I myself have a dripping tap that drives me nuts some days, but have yet to fix it.
Another great example of getting inspiration from the strangest events. Awesome!

  • LoveDoctor on Feb 3, 2011

This is very amusing, but a very clever poem. Glad the problem was fixed. Trying to get a good night’s sleep when there is noise is a horrible feeling.

  • T. S. Lewis on Feb 3, 2011

You continue to show us that poetry is all around us. Sleep well.

  • Julie McMurchie on Feb 3, 2011

This is a fun poem, and something we can all relate to. The annoying drip is bad enough, wondering if there is a major problem is even worse.

  • Ruby Hawk on Feb 3, 2011

Christine, that is a wearisome sound. We had it happen not long ago and I was up and down all night trying to tighten taps. As you say the plumber had it fixed in moments.

  • Tina Cassello on Feb 3, 2011

I love the way you take ordinary and sometimes unpleasant routines of life and turn them into fun poems. I am a sound sleeper so I am not bothered by the dripping of the bathroom sink (I don\’t have the luxury of a bathroom in my bedroom). I did break a faucet trying to stop it though, so I am glad you did not use too much force. I don\’t have to call a plumber because I rent but I have so much stuff in there that no one would have room to work and I can\’t really let them come to fix it or send someone to do it until I clear it out, (an impossible), so I put up with it. I can\’t use cold water there, but I still have the kitchen sink.

  • Suni51 on Feb 3, 2011

Those are so torturous, one can go mad really. .

I’m also distracted by sounds especially in the evening such as drips from the faucet. Nice account of a particular situation.

  • Starpisces on Feb 3, 2011

I can understand, sometimes not only the drip drip drip, but also the flush flush flush sound.
    Very well expressed poem.

  • monica55 on Feb 3, 2011

I had some drip, drip drip to, but it happened in the bathroom; and there is a sturdy door between it and my bedroom. So it never stressed me out. Lovely poem as usual. Keep posting them.

  • Erin Miller on Feb 4, 2011

I can relate to the drip. I ended up learning first hand sink plumbing. LOL.

  • jimbob1 on Feb 4, 2011

CR…this is a great write…I like it a lot…sorry there was a problem in the first place that caused you to write it though…something about dripping water that unnerves us because we are well aware of damage that excessive water in the wrong place can cause…thanks and take care

  • papaleng on Feb 4, 2011
