Like bees we often mean well when we share honey with someone. That person may end up pulling us down causing us to drown in our own kindness. Still we continue to take these risks.
Bees work diligently
At making honey
That we love
- – -
Like us
During this process
They may drown
Cover of Bees (Denver Museum Insect Books)
- – -
As a people
We can be polite
Considerate
And willing to go
That extra mile
For another
But we may
Not be appreciated
- – -
Take Sally
Who cries out for help
After losing her job
- – -
You take her in
Providing her with warmth
Shelter and food
But in spite of your benevolence
She’s angry and destructive
Lashing out at the world
- – -
She abuses you
Pulls you down
Exploiting
Your kindness
And you’re left
To wallow in misery
- – -
Like a worker bee
Sharing honey
While doing the right thing
You eventually drown
By reaching out to her
With your kind acts
- – -
Sally ripped
Your goodness apart
With unappreciative remarks
Abusive comments
And dragged you down
- – -
You succumb
To her displeasure
Becoming helpless
Being unable to swim
Even to save yourself
- – -
Isn’t that reminiscent
Of our Savior
That came into this world?
- – -
For sheer love
Though, we continue
To reach out
To some of the less fortunate
Among us
Being quite aware
Of these risks
