Like bees we often mean well when we share honey with someone. That person may end up pulling us down causing us to drown in our own kindness. Still we continue to take these risks.

Bees work diligently

At making honey

That we love

- – -

Like us

During this process

They may drown

In their own salve

Cover of Bees (Denver Museum Insect Books)

- – -

As a people

We can be polite

Considerate

And willing to go

That extra mile

For another

But we may

Not be appreciated

- – -

Take Sally

Who cries out for help

After losing her job

- – -

You take her in

Providing her with warmth

Shelter and food

But in spite of your benevolence

She’s angry and destructive

Lashing out at the world

- – -

She abuses you

Pulls you down

Exploiting

Your kindness

And you’re left

To wallow in misery

- – -

Like a worker bee

Sharing honey

While doing the right thing

You eventually drown

By reaching out  to her

With your kind acts

- – -

Sally ripped

Your goodness apart

With unappreciative remarks

Abusive comments

And dragged you down

- – -

You succumb

To her displeasure

Becoming helpless

Being unable to swim

Even to save yourself

- – -

Isn’t that reminiscent

Of our Savior

That came into this world?

- – -

For sheer love

Though, we continue

To reach out

To some of the less fortunate

Among us

Being quite aware

Of these risks

- – -

Some people can’t help the way they are. They feel they have been wronged by the world and cannot appreciate an act of kindness. You have expressed this so well.

    Very well written and sound.

Kindness is most times a good thing but you really do have to be careful for those who try to take advantage of it. You are right on point!

I do not think you could possibly write a bard poem. Another great poem.

Very nice! So true , so we try…to expect nothing and not to get in too deep beyond the real need. We may not die physically but the spirit can sure get beat up bad. I like the honey/bee concept.

An excellent piece. I like the imagery of the honey as it relates to people. This reminded me of a family friend who my parents and me provided for financially at some point when he was going through a tough situation and ended up being so ungrateful and vengeful.

I think it is in poor taste for someone to act that ungrateful.

some people are too self centered to see the goodness in others. they just can’t help it. unfortunately, they continue to be disgusted with life as they are blind to the wonderful side of humanity…the good ones need to continue with their kindness..irrespective of the thankless :)
