Inspired by a photo, a poem re library archives of Dundee University, my alma mater, where I studied to gain an Honours degree in Modern History & American Studies 1985-89.
Formaldehyde, antiseptic aroma
Emanating from university archives;
Row upon monotone row of orderly
Classification according to Dewey system;
Everything in its place with no room for error.
Who’s Who almanacs, Council records,
Planning applications, social statistics -
Opposite, storage space for more publications.
Overhead, fluorescent strip lighting spaced evenly;
Temperature-controlled thermostat set at 21C.
Regulation and consistency all-important.
