Imagining a scene of the City of London, in the credit crunch, inspired by an abstract photo I took to be an aerial thermal imaging satellite photo.

Satellite thermal-imaging view of the City

Picking out the Bank of England, Nat West Tower,

Lloyd’s, the ‘Erotic Gherkin’, Liverpool Street Station.

Carmine-red, electric-yellow, emerald, ultramarine,

Indicating heat sources and energy consumption -

Little sign of traffic at 4.00am.

Lattice-grids subdividing urban jungle into sectors.

In background, Canary Wharf and the site of London 2012

Olympics, still largely unbuilt – untapped potential

Or a bankrupt white elephant?

All overlooked by the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral,

Striking in its own modernity when constructed,

Bridging the divide between old, genteel London and

Brash commercialisation of the modern City.
