A tribute poem to my brother, my hero.
Tag! You’re it!
I remember how we used to play make-believe
and running games
Hide and Seek
“Ow! Mom he hit me!”
“Did not she’s lying!”
Monopoly and Candyland
“Be nice you two!”
Battleship
Blind Man’s Bluff
Chutes and Ladders too
We used to sleep, all three, crowded in one bed
waiting to hear hooves dance above our heads
“I’m getting a hamster.”
“Are not.”
“Yea-huh, mom said.”
“Scoot over.”
“No it’s my bed.”
“Jessi! You’re hogging the covers!”
I remember us two, the coalition against Barney
Bullies and protectors too
“I’m not touching you…”
“Stop”
“I’m not touching you. I’m not touching…”
“Stop it Trevor!”
“Stop it Trevor!”
“Mom!”
“Crybaby…”
Confidants, cohorts, enemies, and friends
Brother and Sister.
High school came and up we grew. I wasn’t but you were cool
“You’re such a dork.”
Yea, I was.
Driver’s license came. And I was still a geek, except when you wanted to go to the beach.
“Come on Jess…”
“No”
“Jessica!”
It was fun to make you beg. And up we grew
Grandma
Seizure
Pap-pap
I cried
“It’s okay Jessi…”
but you were strong
I remember speeding in New Jersey. Leah telling you to slow down. The comp saluting you.
A Marine
My brother. I admire you for doing something I could never do. But its hard to see you go.
“I love you Trevor.”
And even though I know you will, don’t be a hero
“I love you too, Jessica.”
You’re already mine.
