Winter in the North Country; the hills, fields, village streets are snow laden and ice encrusted, it’s cold but it is also beautiful. Imagine moonlight on snow.

Day is done and darkness falls
beneath the shadow wings of night,
yet in a sky like black velvet
sparkle bright points of light;
the evening star that first is seen,
then the moon all bright pearl white,
then arrives a zillion tiny stars
shimmering sparks of light.

The street lamps ‘long the village street
begin to softly glow through
shadows cast from wings of night
to gently glisten on white snow,
to give luminescent sheen
on frozen, icy path
while silently at end of day,
with light footsteps I pass.

As darkness falls and shadows creep
that would darken soul of night,
the grace of God sends peacefulness
and turns on His lesser lights
with now and then a lacy flake,
much to my delight,
that comes dancing off a wayward cloud
in a nearly clear night sky.

As I take an evening stroll,
the night seems sublime,
all the burdens of the day,
lifted and lost in time.
As this sharp winter day now ends,
wrapped in this hallowed shine,
a peaceful quiet settles in,
within this heart of mine
while the unseen, yet known
walks with me
and life seems perfectly all right
as heaven winks an assuring smile
and I walk in His light.

Day is done and darkness falls
beneath the shadow wings of night
yet such a sweet peace surrounds me
in this world of winter white
and I stroll along the frozen wind
of river, now clasped in ice it lays,
and I wonder at the sheer beauty
that ends this winter day.
