With the 2011 elections come and gone, there is need for the Nigerian government to put the necessary machineries in place to ensure a free and fair election come 2015. While it is not in dispute that the 2011 was an improvement from the 1999, 2003 and 2011 elections, the country still has a long way to go in ensuring the attainment of a free and fair electoral system.
In the first place, the country must be divided into workable constituencies in such a manner that will ensure the fair representation of every section of the society. This can be achieved through single – member, functional or multi – member representation to the legislative arm of government.
It is also important to ensure proper compilation of voters registers. The names of eligible voters should be included in electoral rolls or register of voters and there should be a periodic and proper review of these from time to time to update it and remove ghost names as well as add omitted ones.
Voters should be allowed to cast their votes for the candidates of their choice without any form of intimidation or victimization whatsoever. They should have the freedom to choose from the various candidates running for the elections. Secret balloting should be adopted in order to ensure the safety of these voters. Also, the electoral body must ensure that the pictures of the candidates running for the elections are clearly displayed on the ballot paper in order to ensure that the voters make a clear choice.
Also, the principle of “one man one vote” should be embraced and applied to the fullest. The idea of impersonation during elections should be expunged from our national consciousness. Electoral officers should be diligent in their duties by ensuring that only credible voters are allowed to vote. They should also implement all electoral rules strictly as well as avoid rigging and thuggery at election venues.
The idea of the government in power influencing the voting process should be resisted vehemently. Government should not collude with electoral officers to falsify records in favor of government candidates as has always been the cases in previous times.
