A poem about the great Ernie Davis who played football for Syracuse. He was the first African American to win the Heisman Trophy.

Ernie Davis became famous and not by football alone

His life was not easy, His trials were many

and he came from a broken home

Cared for by his Grandpa

raised and loved

He looked for guidance in heaven above

In High School was All-American

many scholarships he received

over 50 were offered, Ernie could not believe

They called him the Elmira Express

for his grace and speed

And in 1959

 was named MVP

The Heisman Trophy he finally did win

So proud was his mama

and family and friends

Was drafted in the NFL in 1962

this was a challenge

he knew he could pursue

By the age of 23, Ernie fell ill

Leukemia took him away

but forever his number did stay

The Browns retired #45

to keep the spirit

of Ernie alive
