Funerals are sad moments where we farewell our loved ones for one official final time. But it doesn’t always have to be sad, in certain cultures its considered one of the happiest moments where we can celebrate what a fulfilling life our departing loved one had. These poems can help ease the transition and help us view death from a different angle.
1) “Death is a door” by Nancy Turner,
This poem provides numerous imageries that portray nature and how we came from nature and will eventually return to nature as we pass away. It depicts death as harmless and painless, exactly what needs to be said to bring some joyous celebrations to a gloomy funeral.
2) “Goodbye My Friend” by Karla Bonof,
This story, and song, revolves around the numbing and sense of denial that we all feel when we are lost or have lost something dear to us. This is a more dark poem, where the author agrees that she will never see her friend again, but thank that friend dearly for the happy and fun times they have shared. A truly fitting good bye poem.
3)”I will remember you” by Sarah McLachlan
This one also concentrates on the idea where the author acknowledges she will never see her loved one again too. But instead of the typical gloom and denial most of us resort to, she talks about the good times she have had and will treasure those memories forever.
4)”Gone from my sight” by Henry Van Dyke
This poem compares the passing of a human life with that of a ship departing from the port. He shares with us the idea that the soul never really leaves and we will most definitely see out loved ones again sooner or later.
