"There is grandeur in this view of life…", wrote Charles Darwin in the last paragraph of The Origin of Species. This is a short poem to celebrate the man and the brilliant confirmations of his theory, as well as the deeply transcendental beauty of it.

The rocks of ages, glimpsing
Worlds of a time immemorial
Of dynasties and turmoil, flowering
And death
An ancient dance, played out
On a scale of grandeur
Weaving tracks through
The garden of possibilies
Of rivers departing
And departing again
Blind to the future
Fortuitous springs
Of novelty and repetition
Themes performed
On the stage of deep time
Punctuated
And set once more
For another round
Of glorious branching
