This is my entry for Aiyanna’s poetry competition, based on the image here: http://writinghood.com/online-writing/the-next-topic-for-the-poetry-competition/

Right in the middle of an ordinary sunset:
Candy cane skies with a lithium burn;
A smokey haze between the glistening and the sparkling;
A point in the sky, growing as it falls
But shortening, doused by the small blue planet
Of endless water – and sometimes, an island,
And upon that island, sometimes, a miracle.
Some call it a fairytale, but I believe.
Silhouetted against the remarkable radiance
Is a shadow. We see black outlines,
A mysterious smudge which taints
That not so ordinary sunset of our lives.
But that very smudge, that blot on our timeline,
Stands out as something so much brighter,
Even rarer and more phenomenal against that sunset.
For as the daylight fades beneath the horizon,
Their hearts are set alight with love;
That unparalleled burning emotion
Which nothing, not even the rolling tides
Of the ocean, can snuff out.

    That’s really lovely. I love your interpretation, and the way you’ve just turned all the ordinary into extraordinary throughout.
