"Fairy tales can come true, it can happen to you…" – lyrics from a 1953 Frank Sinatra hit composed by Johnny Richards and Carolyn Leigh.

I see it all around me–cheerfulness and laughter–
Couples sharing storybook-like happy ever after.
It makes me smile and wonder what they know that I do not–
Something that I once knew but along the way forgot.

It’s good my memory’s not as sharp as once it used to be.
Forgetting troubles that I know comes easier for me.
I’m glad that some folks’ life is just a great big bowl of cherries
But I believe that fairy tales will only work for fairies.

Ken the only thing some people know.. is how to hide the truth a bit better than others…

I’ve watched many story-book fairy tale lives shatter into pieces, I prefer a good adventure story myself.

Some where over the rainbow, dreams do come true. I f you are young at heart. If life is just a bowl of cherries? why do we only remember bitting down on the pits.
    nice writing

Great work, unfortunately your right fairy tales are just that! relationships are damn hard to get right. Things will get better real soon. David

All fairy tales have unhappy, difficult and most times near impossible obstacles that need to be overcome. It\’s the fortitude, determination and care for each other which the hero\’s of those tales have, that culminates in a happy ending. If even one of the characters in the tale are weak, unforgiving, selfish or depraved then the tale most certainly will end badly.

Yes, fairy tales are absurd, but give a vicarious pleasure. Lovely wiki image, seems out of a dream and suits the poem very well.

It’s so easy to feel cynical about love when you are alone and surrounded by couples who seem to have that special something. I especially like your ending line, Ken, “But I believe that fairy tales will only work for fairies.” Nice work.

I also like that Frank Sinatra song–isn’t that the song from the movie with the same title, “Young at Heart”?

  • Ruby Hawk on May 3, 2010

Ken, you and me both. It’s been a long time since I believed in fairy tales.

  • LoveDoctor on May 4, 2010

That’s why it came true for me! I am a fairy. Lol

  • Angela Faith on May 4, 2010

The blind truth is one thing….but a blind lie!! Fairy Tales are Fairy TALES…..Good writing ken. I like it. f

  • Emma Green on May 4, 2010

I have to agree with you Mr, fairytales are just fairytales! A pretence from the truth, no relationship or anyone’s life is as happy or perfect as they may show or tell! Good wrk, especially the last line, very strong indeed.

If you like life to be fair, believe in fairies and read fairy tales, lol.

  • PR Mace on May 4, 2010

Ken, life is what you make it and in mine I find lots of pits in my bowl of cherries. But then what is life without some pits? I just wish I would stop falling into mine.

  • Olive B. on May 4, 2010

Sayin’ it like it is. Nice one. Cherries are good; just don’t swallow the pits.

  • lillyrose on May 5, 2010

Beautiful…. My Grandmother used to buy me a hugh book of fairytales every Christmas. I still have some of them.

  • Angela Faith on May 7, 2010

I have been humming that damn song now for two days!!! lololol

  • Ask Cash on May 8, 2010

Some times it does feel that fairy tales are for every one but you, but may be that’s how almost everyone feels…

  • rizzei on May 10, 2010

fairy tales give hope. We cannot actually guarantee a happy ending..nice share, sir.. :)

  • Shirley Shuler on May 10, 2010

Great piece, Ken. You are so spot on, fairy tales will only work for fairies!

how i wish these fairy tales were for real!! sigh

  • Daisy Peasblossom on Jun 2, 2010

Cherry pits are good for growing cherry trees. Granted, only a few of them get the chance. Happily ever-aftering gets a little harder once you notice mortality; then you just have to settle for living in the moment.
