One man’s reflection of distance and time through the falling leaves.

The days pass one after the other
tumbling forth in rapid procession
until one day I feel the chill
in the air and I realize that fall
has arrived. I look up at the sky
and watch the clouds move slowly by
marveling at the way their color turns from
blue to grey when the cold sets in.

Suddenly my attention is caught by
a single leaf floating down through
the breeze. It’s color once a vibrant green
now sports a bold yellow and orange hue
somehow reminding me of you, and
I shiver at the thought that
so much time has passed and yet we
are still apart. How can it be
that time passes so quickly and yet
each day seems to last an eternity
as I wait for that day when we
will be together? Then as I watch
the leaf settle to the ground landing
in a virtual sea of leaves each with a color
different than the other I realize that
each day changes me just a fraction from
who I was into who I am meant to be.

Perhaps a little bolder or maybe a little stronger
but each change has its reason … and I,
like the season, evolve into something greater
before it becomes my time to die.
So I breathe in deep the chilled air
knowing that time will pass and that
one day our lives will come together just
as the leaves falling from the trees
because we are meant to be.
