This is a poem I wrote on Father’s Day as I sat in the grass next to my son’s grave.
This is the first Father’s Day without you
The emotions have caught me off guard
I didn’t think it would be different
Didn’t think it would be this hard
No phone call this morning
No lunch this afternoon
No promise for tomorrow
Or “I’ll see you soon”
Oh how i miss you my boy
Look down and see the tears
The dagger of love is sharp
The pain of loss is near
I sit in the grass beside you
Surrounded by the deepest of peace
The vastness of death reminds me
That life is only on lease
I still feel you here with me
No one is dead to God
In the spirit you’re still living
Though sleeping beneath the sod
It’s Father’s Day, my son
You and the Lord both know
How often I think about you
Since that day you had to go
