This poem is about a boxer who is taking a beating in the middle of a match and also fighting with himself on the decidion to stay and fight or quit.To me it was actually a symbol of a life struggle, and it could also represent each of our unique problems and our decisions to keep at something or just give up. I wrote it making the boxer and the reader the same person so as to almost put you right in the fight and force the reader to make the decision at the end for themselves if they would fight on through a tough problem or quit while they are still alive.

Fighter or Flighter?

A bell sound
beneath a mumbling crowd
Signaling a release

The first round
Daily woes just a cloud
Pure instincts of a beast

You dodge and duck
You slip and smack
You try to land just one shot
Sometimes it’s luck
from one clean whack
put in the perfect spot

A right cross lands
straight to the face
a left hook down in the ribs

The man still stands
still as a vase
now its your time to feel his

He lands one clean
pound to your jaw
Spine tingles, your legs give way
Time to get mean
You declare war
Drunkenly staggering you sway

Back on your feet
not to repeat
But hes battering, beating
tenderizing you like meat

Bruised and broken
you drop to the floor
What are you even fighting for?

You rise again
The count of  four
Squared up as you were before
Apparently
you have some more
left inside that tank of yours

Mouth full of blood
Eye swollen shut
Your heart bigger than your brain

One more hard thud
right to the gut
Just take a knee your insane!!

Last shot is sharp
Now you’ve fallen
Blurred vision. Crowd gone quiet
Sound of a harp
Angels are callin
You’ve blacked out don’t deny it

(One)…all a while
(Two)…Thinking of
(Three)…all those things
(Four)…that you love
(Five)…Maybe kids?
(Six)…Perhaps wife??
(seven)…Something then
(eight)…gives you life

You stand at nine
Looking like hell
Backing up into the ropes
Suddenly Time!
Saved by the bell
The crowd boos out “YOU’RE A DOPE!”

So what to do?
You must decide
Throw in the towel? Fight on?

Bell sounds round Two……..

My favorite part of this piece is the count. It reminds me of one of the techniques I use when a problem starts to bring me to the breaking point. I stop and count to 10 and try to remind myself how I got here and why I should soldier on. After the beating this character has had, what would make them get back in there? It sure needs to be something worth the beating. I know I\’ve taken a mental and emotional beating before and despite it, I got back up and took some more. In the end it was always worth it. But when is enough simply enough…
