Poem about the bush firestorms close to Melbourne,Victoria,Australia in Feb 2009.

Fire fire fire, the dreaded call of the land,

hear the frightening cries, of beast and man…

With the temperature’s high, and not a cloud in the sky,

the strong wind is dry, the land begins to fry…

In birth pangs it comes alive, with the roll of beating drums,

cares for no skin or hide, how quickly it learns to run…

Its said of the little tongue, can cause nations to fight,

just like a little spark, can set a forest alight…

Over mountains it roars, a panorama of bright red,

into the sky it soars, it has left its flaming bed…

Exploding across the tree tops, it happily skips and dance,

like horses on the trot, so quickly it does advance…

Its a glimpse of the devil’s breath, consumes all in its way,

a hot flaming fire of death, could this be our doomsday…

It doesn’t even crawl, this inferno of heat and smoke,

all in it’s way will fall, it care not for the ordinary bloke…

There’s much suffering and pain, of stubbornness and courage,

many pray for rain, for a miracle in a scientific age…

Some did not heed the warnings, others fled for their lives,

survivors were left mourning, the fire has no side’s…

The loyalty of two young girls, their horses were their world,

from the fire they tried to hide, unfortunately they all died…

Of the little koala bear, emerging all burnt from the brink,

and from the fireman’s water bottle, was seen to taking a drink…

Many died in their homes, little ones the elderly and infirm,

teens with their cell phones, all died from their burns…

In burnt out cars were found, the remains of families,

homes were raised to the ground, such losses such tragedies…

The hills were charred black, white ash laid like snow,

you couldn’t find a track, there was nowhere to go…

The fire called to his mates, come and have some fun,

may our smoke cover the state, and lets blot out the sun…

A half a million acres burned, townships completely destroyed,

areas were sealed and barred, investigating police were deployed…

The nation became companions, one for all and all for one,

they’ll shed tears for their brethren, the fallen shall not be forgotten…

Today they will fight on, tomorrow they’ll sing their songs,

for in their hearts belong, the young weak and strong…

Oh you burning fire’s, you will not destroy our desires,

we will conquer all adversity, for now and all eternity…

Though your a true Aussie, even though you bring us pain,

you are part of our history, and we will meet again….

You have really conveyed, very well, the tragedy of it all, It’s sad that it takes this sort of devestation to bring people together, however. Much like 9-11 in the States.

What can i say. That brought tears to my eyes. Ive goon to Vic and seen the charred earth around Traralgon last year. Bush fires are a curse of this land, a vast land of natural beauty.

I remember seeing in the paper, at the time of the fire. It was in the caricature section at the back, the editorial section. And what i saw hit me! It was the australian emblem, the kangaroo and the emy, charred, and smoking. The em, in tears said ‘we’ve lost everything!’. The kangaroo andwered, ‘ we still have each other!’

Not often do you see a grown man cry at reading a newspaper. I guess the picture truly portrayed what this nation is about…

Thankyou so much for this read Stan, its legendary!
