A facelift is a plastic surgery procedure that removes fine lines, improves wrinkles, and generally tightens the skin around the face and neck. A facelift surgery targets the lower, middle, and sides of the face and is often combined with a brow lift, forehead lift, and/or neck lift to tighten the skin and reduce wrinkles in adjacent areas for a completely refreshed look.
While there are many reasons people choose to have a facelift, these reasons are almost always motivated by the desire for a person to increase their self-esteem and feel better about themselves from the outside in. Many facelift patients simply want a chance to look as good as they used to, and a facelift offers a way to turn back the clock. Looking good means feeling good and feeling good about yourself, which is essential for a happy and productive life.
Reduce Natural Signs of Age
Because a facelift mainly tightens skin, it is first and foremost an anti-aging procedure, and this is the most common reason people get a facelift. The procedure pulls loose skin away from the face, making lines and wrinkles disappear. Gravity takes its toll over the years and can cause loose skin to accumulate under the eyes, mouth, and the neck where it sometimes creates jowls.
Wrinkles form, not only due to gravity, but also because of natural facial expressions like smiling, laughing, and furrowing your brow. Ironically, the happier you are, the more likely you are to develop fine lines and wrinkles associated with age.
Many older facelift patients combine the procedure with a nose job, otherwise known as rhinoplasty, because the nose continues to grow throughout a person’s life and can become disproportionate to the face over time.
Your face is aging faster than your body
Many facelift patients in their thirties, forties, and fifties experience a suddenly noticeable difference between the youthfulness of their face and body. Because the face is constantly exposed and ultimately damaged, the skin can start to look aged long before skin on other areas of the body.
Some active patients have great bodies and desire a face to match. Keeping the face in shape requires a different type of daily regimen than the rest of the body, but many people don’t realize this until the damage is done. Thankfully, the option of a facelift means it’s never too late and gives many patients a second chance.
Correct skin damage
Because the face is always exposed, it receives the most damage and abuse. Sun damage, scars from injuries, acnes scars, and enlarged pores can all be improved by tightening the skin.
Tighten skin after weight loss
When an overweight or obese patient loses a significant amount of weight, it leaves a lot of loose, stretched skin behind. A facelift combined with a neck lift removes the excess skin.
While a facelift is not a weight loss procedure, stubborn fat deposits around the perimeter of the face can be removed by combining a facelift with liposuction. Liposuction removes the fat cells and the facelift procedure removes the excess skin that’s left behind.
