Flick’ring Candleabra
Oh, flick’ring candleabra,
Standing on the polished wood.
What viewings have you witnessed,
What occurrences withstood?
Was there murder on the threshold,
a stabbing in your wake?
Where the blood poured down like raindrops
From the tip of steely blade.
Did the servant poison master?
Was there arsenic in his mead?
Did the peasant laugh with malice
When he found his task complete?
Or was dinner shared by candlelight
Between two lovers true?
Where compliments were whispered
With passionate kisses strewn.
Or as your wick was dying,
Did you lull sweet babe to sleep?
As its mother sang soft lullabies
to calm tender offspring.
Please tell us what your life has held,
The things that you have seen.
Oh, flick’ring candleabra
As your flame dies,
Peaceful dreams.
