Life seemed so easy and such fun when we were children.

I remember those distant childhood days.

They seem so very far away,

When life was simple and full of fun,

And we played outside all day.

*

I remember the table full of wet washing,

And the cheese on toast for tea.

The underground hut that we dug in the garden,

And our Sundays in Wales by the sea.

*

I remember going abroad on holidays

Though money was always quite tight.

We’d scrimp and scrape to save our fares

But we never had enough for a flight.

*

We bought a huge car to travel about in.

It was almost a rust bucket on wheels,

But it got us to where we wanted to go

And it proved to be a very good deal.

*

I remember my father’s great ideas

Which he dreamed would make us all rich.

He had so many mad-cap schemes in his head

But there always seemed to be a hitch.

*

I remember camping on a steep slope

And our tent suddenly started walking.

It looked so funny, as it toppled down the hill

And it set all the campers talking.

*

My dad built a house which was quite unique

With room for a much wanted pool

And though we dug and dug for two whole weeks

We only finished up with a deep hole.

*

So often I look back at the things that we did.

Our childhood days were never dull.

And thanks to the support from our Mum and Dad

We’ve led lives which were so rich and full.

I think it’s not only childhood that becomes a great memory of mine. I also feel great to do my teenager-hood and young-adult-hood that I’m currently experiencing now. Every step in live feels so wonderful! Because I always remember that TODAY is the best day EVER! I always say that to myself, especially when I have a bad morning.

  • Cassle Tang on May 26, 2011

But yes, your childhood is so wonderful and fun! :) I never experienced something like that before but I feel lucky with my own life, anyway. :) Nice to know you, you are amazing.

  • Cyni1106 on May 26, 2011

Yes, our childhood memories are dear to our heart. When we become adults those memories are the very thing we pass on to our children to make their childhood memorable. They will never come close to the ones we cherish but, we also have the new ones to make us live on. Thanks Christine beautiful share thank you.

  • LadyElena on May 26, 2011

Aaaawh…. such a beautiful poem. It brought back memories of playing Hop Scotch on the pavement and playing with marbles.

You have a family full of Love, Christine. Money can’t buy that.

    Thanks for sharing.

Ps…. made me think, those were the days when kids could play outside and mum’s would be at peace. Now, we need CCTV at every angle of the playground.

Memories of childhood is really unforgettable.

  • gaby7 on May 27, 2011

There is nothing as sweet as my childhood memories! They simply make me think my own children are not having the kind of good times we had as children! We are more protective of our children today than our fathers were of us! I would go bird hunting alone in the wildest of bushes-meeting pythons and snakes-but when I was back home, my dad would sit me down and ask after my adventures of the day-even if I told him I met a snake, he would never tell me to stop my childhood adventures next day-I was as free as a bird in the air and you and me know freedom is sweet! Great poem here Teacher!

  • Mike Godfrey on May 27, 2011

My childhood days were not dull either, but the world has moved on and what fascinated me a the time would have been totally boring to my children.
A very enjoyable poem that got me reminiscing about days gone by (It was Sundays by the sea in Brighton for me though).

  • papaleng on May 27, 2011

Luchy are we Christine to have fond childhood memories, If only you can see my neighbors and their children, you will be saddened and may ask yourself, will these children have a childhood memories to cherish? BTW I live just a stone-throw away from a slum area.
