Teddy Bear was a happy child

It was unusual to have that name

But his parents did not mind 

They had simply love bears

And their last name was Bear

Teddy went to some of the best schools

Because he was smart

Excelled at whatever he did

And played football in college

- – -

It was after he left school

And was drafted by the NFL 

That he suffered a concussion

And his good life began to unravel

- – -

His mother that was at the game

Immediately saw

That something was wrong

But Teddy’s coach that was interested

In winning insisted

That “the bear” continue to play

- – -

“You’re a bear!”  He shouted

“You can stand the attack.

It’s normal for kids to collide. 

Nothing is wrong in being hit

Every now and again.”

But Teddy did not reveal 

That for awhile he was unconscious

And his vision was blurry

- - 

Teddy’s father Claude was gong ho

About him continuing to play

“Let the boy play,” he yelled,

“The kid has to grow up,

and experience what the real world

is like.  You’re knocked down

and have to get up.” 

Claude and his family would have

To swallow a bitter pill

Teddy continued playing

After being examined by a doctor

He was hit again from behind

And once again he collapsed on the field

With more serious injuries

Was rushed to a nearby hospital

Via an ambulance

- – -

His mother and father are presently

At each others’ throat

The blame game had begun

His mother saying that she told 

Her husband, that Teddy didn’t

Look right the first time around

But John said, “that’s the sort of thing

kids have to experience

if they have to play a sport.”

Teddy lived

But was blinded by the experience

For the rest of his life

They’ll have to pay huge medical bills

And he will be under the care of a doctor
