As a woman who has been mistreated, abused, lied to and cheated on, I wrote this poem for all women who have been in abusive or controlling relationships. For all of us women who have struggled to hold on to who they are in the midst of the craziness and chaos of an abusive relationship. Break the chains, empower yourself! Demand respect!

Forbidden
You claimed that you loved me
But what you loved was some idyllic vision
You did not want to know the woman that I am
You wanted me to become your angelic apparition
When I did not fit into your mold
You reached in and tried to change the core of me
You may have hoped that I’d be putty in your hands
But at the core of me, there is strength, you see
How dare you try to drown my spirit ?
I will not be submerged into oblivion !
To try to control me, is not only wrong;
In my life, it is forbidden !
Did you think that I would surrender to your will,
that you could stunt the growth of my determination?
Did you think that I would crumble at your feet ?
Did you think, that I could be bullied into submission ?
How wrong you were about me
if you thought that I would give away my power
I demand respect, for I am a woman who has her own voice
I am not something that you can conquer!
