Symbols get messed up over the ages, meaning quite different things to different groups at one time or another. Maybe it is about time to just be grateful for the thing, instead of what it has come to symbolize.

A murder of crows,

obscured by,

the unkindness of ravens,

a rainbow pierces,

Image via Wikipedia

this assumed vile,

this assumed unholy event,

this wonder,

this beauty,

just some birds flying,

Image via Wikipedia

their beauty obscured,

obscured by symbolism,

bring on the dove,

the olive branch,

extent that symbol,

to the murder of crows,

to the unkindness of ravens,

rainbows,

rainbows,

rainbows,

rainbow warrior,

rainbow coalition,

take a ride of the homo rainbow,

Image via Wikipedia

to some a symbol of God’s promise,

to others a symbol of Satan.

Strange mutterings,

at a New Age bookstore,

by Fundamentalist Militants,

throwing threats and taunts,

about rainbow titles.

Image via Wikipedia

Rainbows now obscured,

by time,

by miscommunication,

inferior education,

Image via Wikipedia

home schooling,

family bookstore sensationalism,

everyone claiming that symbol,

it’s ever so lovely,

Image via Wikipedia

the color spectrum,

now damaged goods,

damaged by symbolism,

every symbol takes abuse,

Image via Wikipedia

even the rainbow,

a symbol of God,

a symbol of Satan,

Image via Wikipedia

Get over it,

it is beautiful,

regardless of either deity,

focus on the beauty,

not the cause,

not the symbolism,

enjoy,

enjoy,

stop being a sycophant,

for good,

for evil,

being a sycophant,

is evil either way,

just be thankful,

for the beauty,

Image via Wikipedia

gratitude finds its’ own way,

to its’ destination.

Any one who things Rabbits feet are symbols of good luck, have never looked at it from the view point of the rabbit.

  • Jack Rodnessey on Nov 29, 2009

    Interesting poem.

I like to think that each of us is a prism, through whom the rainbow, for purposes all its own, rather than refract, instead filters our own inner light. (Howzat for New Age-y? ;^D )

Excellent. We’re so good at complicating everything, aren’t we?

  • Butterfly Musings on Nov 30, 2009

So you’re saying, “Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.”?

Believe it or not. I still call the kids out of the house to see rainbows. Just because.

Nicely said and well summarized in the last line. That last line is quite and insight (and included now on my ideas page).

I really liked it. Could be way off but I think this speaks to the point of art being art for art’s sake. Judging art not by the artist or his agenda ( or alleged agenda) but by its beauty and and truth.

Hey – that was really really cool. I enjoyed that immensely and whole heartedly agree with the sentiment. We are as a species so fond of symbolism and labels – we all too quickly forget the essence of a thing. Great entry to the challenge dude.

Nice piece for the Duff challenge. You pretty much covered every concievable scenerio with this piece. Well done.

nothing like a little thought to disrupt perfectly good entrenched beliefs! Good Write my friend.

  • BradONeill on Dec 3, 2009

I give it a thumbs up which used to be a thumbs down which originally meant the emperor was giving the ok to kill a fallen gladiator which drove the crowd wild and now we use this symbol simply to say good job.

I read this poem again after several days. There is so much in it to
ponder I’m sure I’ll return to it again. Take care, I don’t envy you
    a winter in Alberta.
