A Poem about the Egyptian Revolution.

Freedom

By Youssef Mohsen, aged 14, Cairo.

On the 25th of January,

A great thing happened,

A beast was unleashed,

An example for all mankind was set.

The revolution broke out,

Searching for freedom,

Searching for justice,

Searching for what was truly theirs.

The revolution sought to end corruption,

To end poverty and hunger,

To retain basic human rights,

To build a new country…

In spite of all the deaths,

In spite of all the obstacles,

The beast carried on,

Determined to reach its destiny.

After all,

Freedom is the goal,

Freedom is everything,

Freedom is life!

And on the 11th of February,

Egypt was set free.

The beast had reached the goal.

The 11th of February,

A day for history.

I loved the image of the beast being released and making its way to a final destination – it reminded me of Yeats’ “The Second Coming”, (also about revolution and with the link to Egypt) which has been one of my favourite poems since A Level!)
