A killer stalks the oceans.

The netting hangs like a veil

floating in the sea.

Drifting days, weeks, years,

perhaps eternity.

Catching and keeping

all that it can.

Catching and killing

in the name of man.

Its owner long gone,

having sailed away,

Left the netting behind

as it did stray.

The killer it is,

though it was meant to be.

Just not on its own

it shouldn’t be free.

The ghost net stalks the ocean

snagging death on its route.

Grabbing all kinds of life

like fine treasured loot.

To wash up on the shore

among the sand pails,

between the old boards

with old rusty nails.

The net and its trophy of death,

its rewards stolen from the sea,

at least it no longer searches

not for this eternity.

Image a net floating in the ocean, catching fish and other life until the animals it in cause the net to sink.  Once bottom feeders eat the animals in the net it rises again and the cycle of death continues.  This is the life of a Ghost net, a drift net that has gotten lost in the ocean and will remain there until it washes ashore.

Nice poem. Has the ring of a challenge. I saw on TV there is a private movement begun to start one by one removing abandoned nets from the sea. Hopeless, I suppose, but if they can get some out it can’t hurt.

A unique creation. These nets are worst than left over sea mines when it catches marine life. Lovely work Brenda.

What a shame we as a nation care so little for our ocean friends to allow ghost nets to trap and kill them. Thanks for bringing this into the light.

The sea is full of junk and rubbish these days. We need to do something about it. Animals are having a hard enough time because of mans interference.

Great message contained in this well written piece.

  • maranatha on Oct 27, 2009

Well done, B. A somber message indeed. I gett irritated every time we go fishing, seeing the miles of fishing line and lures left to lay in the water.

  • Darla Cooke on Oct 27, 2009

This is a very interesting poem.

  • hfj on Oct 27, 2009

Nice poem B. I can see where this would be a real menace and killer to sea life. Thanks for bringing this issue to everyone’s attention. Well done.
