The gift of the pen wields considerable influence.

A writer may ask the question

Does a gift of the pen

Come naturally

As some revelation

Or does it come in stages?

- – -

It’s true

This process can

Take many forms

But for the most part

I believe it is

A step by step process

Of development

- – -

It could be likened

To a rocket or spacecraft

Being launched consisting

Of various engines

That are jettisoned into space

Each engine playing

Its part before becoming

Exhausted

Until the rocket

Finally reaches its destination

- – -

What about having accomplished

That extra ability

To be able to stand on stage

Debating with your pen

While others take notice

Of your brilliance?

- – -

All these things

You would accomplish

Through a series of subdivisions

That required efforts

Attempts, trials and errors

- – -

By this time a writer is noted

In public by the use

Of his pen to be objective

Or subjective

It may be as powerful as the sword

Being able to dominate in depicting

Scenes of action for all to debate

And marshaling public opinion

For us to venture into war

As mentioned before

A writer’s gift may not be instant

But through this process he reaches

The final lap of the circuit

Where like being on a theater stage

Or by standing before a podium

He dominates in a colorful way

Being able to set the agenda

While framing the conversation

For hundreds of thousands

- – -

For any of these talented writers

Whether fiction or non fiction

They have reached that pinnacle

Of influence where they will

Be known in perpetuity

- – -

Every generation has produced

Outstanding writers

But who can forget the works

Of William Shakespeare, John Keats

Jane Austin or Ernest Hemingway

While I do agree that a writer must hone his craft, to say that a writer cannot be perceived as good unless he “tunes” his work is untrue. Talent is the kernel that germinates. Without the seed of talent, their can be no writer of note; no matter how hard someone may work.

Art cannot be likened to building something in wood shop. To do so is to sully its inherent magic and good name.
