To Scripture as a thirsty man

Drink deeply of its Well.

Yea, drink, and give to men the source,

That ALL be pleased to dwell

Around this Well where thirst is quenched

And never comes again.

Because it settles on the soul,

Like drought’s refreshing rain!

To Scripture as a hungry man

Would go unto a meal.

So long he has not eaten now.

He sits and takes his fill.

For honey sweet he finds therein

And tender dainties eats.

Where long he had been hungry.

Now he feeds on choicest meat!

To Scripture as a mariner

No longer be ye lost.
But seek and find the Way made known,

To you so free of cost.

For God would have you take His Word,

Embed it in your heart,

Rely thereon for daily life,
Just as the mariners’ chart!

And as ye act on what ye know,
And knowledge shall increase,

God shall illumine with more light,

And grant you rest and peace!

Sit not ye down to read His Book,

Mere intellect to fill!

But let God guide you day by day,

And keep you in His will!
