The Golondrina or Swallow is a common immigrant bird that visits many areas from my state San Luis Potosi, Mexico every summer. The swallow is commonly associated with farewells in Mexico. There is a Mexican song called "Las Golondrinas" and it is often performed in graduations, farewell parties, and funerals. This song was performed in the movie "The Wild Bunch." Although saying good-bye is always so painful, the speaker in my poem longs to be like the swallow, so that she can also fly and escape from the boring life in her town. She has never been beyond the hills that surround her, and the only proof she has that there are "other worlds" out there is the swallow.

This is the picture of “The Cave of Swallows.” It is an open vertical cave located in San Luis Potosi, Mexico.
Golondrina
Golondrina, swallow who knows when to
let go of the past. How I wish that I
could fly with you. And explore
foreign lands that hide behind
the hills of my town.
I have no choice but to wait
here for your return, so
that I can see you arrive
again, tired and yet
strong. With the knowledge
and the wisdom reflected on
your face. Wearing a black
suit that could only look so
good on you. And your bright
orange belly; the only color
in this black and white town.
You are proof
that there are other
worlds out there. Go
golondrina, go,
I will be here when
you return.
