This sonnet explores the paradox of how hardships and difficult relationships can serve to help remedy negative tendencies within our own psyche, thus leading the way to spiritual advancement.
Though slandered or mistakenly accused,
or rudely disrespected or abused,
the wise one realizes hidden grace–
considers it a prize to take last place.
He envies not when eyes lend others praise
but look at him with loathing or malaise.
He counts as friend the ones who pull him down,
and not just those who wish him great renown.
A golden chain can bind as strong as steel;
ideals might serve to blind us to what’s real.
Great fame inflames ones pride and injures soul.
We must accept what food lands in our bowl.
The humbling of the ego truly is
a remedy, ensuring highest bliss.
