This is a poem I composed that depicts how a young matures in each stage. The poem tell of how this girl sheds off her naivety and adopts a more mature and new way of thinking.
Your green girl has come of age
She has learnt some ropes in this bondage, called life
Just like the fresh green grass, you once compared her to
She has been trampled on like you did to the grass that beautiful evening
She sprung up to live again, like the grass did that day too
Your green girl has come of age, she has learnt not cry over spilt milk
She has learnt to dust herself, cover shame with precious silk
She has learnt that tears are a waste, they don’t always earn a ‘sorry’
She has discovered it is struggle for the fittest
And she no longer has to give way
She has learnt ‘excuse me’ does earn you some sneers
She has known she is green and inexperienced
Your green girl has come of age.
She has learnt to spare her smiles,
Her face has now learnt a sneer is not such a bad thing
She has learnt to lie, if only to protect her fragile heart
Your green girl has come of age,
She has known pain, known immense pain
She knows a person can cry for love,
She knows love is not enough
She knows ideologies differ too much to cause pain
She knows she has strained not to cry, a million times
She has tried to act mature, unhurt and unaffected
She has learnt the art too well,
Your green girl has come of age.
