Greenhouse Gas Emissions hits record high
Over the last twenty years, the global community has tried to reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions. But now that number would rise as a new global warming.
A recent report from the International Energy Agency (IEA) show the number of the highest emissions generated from fossil fuels. Related to that, about 180 countries are now preparing to hold a pertemkuan in Bonn, Germany, to deliberate. The meeting will last for two weeks starting on Monday (6 / 6).
The tsunami triggered a nuclear disaster in Japan in March and could make Japan sidelined in the policy to combat climate change and encourage countries such as Germany to accelerate the decommissioning of nuclear power plants.
“The future of Japan’s energy has been neglected. The impact of the disaster has put climate policy at the bottom of the priority list. And all this time Japan became one of the countries which produce more fossil fuels,” said Endre Tvinnereim analyst from consulting firm Point Carbon.
Although renewable energy expanded around the world, reports The Paris-based IEA says carbon emissions in the past year amount to 30 gigatons. The number was increased 5% compared to the year 2008.
According to the IEA’s chief economist, Fatih Birol, the trend of energy must be a serious concern for the whole world. The figures had become a serious setback that causes the earth’s temperature rises, which affect climate change, water supplies, global agriculture, storm until rising sea levels.
Discussions related to the increase of greenhouse gas emissions, held in Bonn was held in order to prepare materials that will be a decision in the UN conference in Durban, South Africa.
Durban meeting could be a debate forum between rich countries and developing countries. So far poorer countries say rich countries produce large industrial gases that contribute to carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
