A poem, truly worth reading!

It was 1603 and was dark and stormy,
Elizabeth the 1st had died suddenly,
England was searching for a heir,
And in came James the 1st to take the chair.

However, he was a protestant,
And was stubborn in his rule,
He fought against the Catholics,
And to them he was very cruel.

Now some Catholics didn’t like that,
They got very angry indeed,
They joined together like an army,
And plotted against his Majesty.

The head of the group was Robert,
Robert Catheby his full name,
He gathered a group of people,
To bring down the King’s short reign.

They hired a tough ex-soldier,
His name Guido Fawkes,
His job was to guard the gunpowder,
He watched it like a hawk.

November 5th was the fateful day,
When the king and ministers would be blown away,
But Mounteagle received an anonymous letter,
That said stay away, it will be better.

Like his name, Mounteagle,
He flew to the King in the white hall,
They discussed this anonymous letter,
And discovered the gunpowder plot.

The way they discovered this info.
Was due to James’ past,
He remembered his dad Lord Darnley,
Who had died by being blown up then shot.

They, however rested,
Waiting until November the 4th,
Then they thought of acting,
And, voila, found Guido Fawkes.

Now lets backtrack,
Just a bit and see what happened to the men,
Who were building this plot still.

The money was supplied by a certain man,
His name i do not know,
But he gave them so much money,
They could get a lot of sticks to blow.

They got ready all the equipment,
Believe me, there was quite a lot,
More than 500 dynamite sticks,
About 3 tons in total.

They also hired a cottage,
that had a cellar below,
The meeting place of the parliament,
Which was now full of sticks to blow.

Now they were ready,
To blow up the parliament,
We can continue our story,
From where we last left it.

The soldiers were searching everywhere,
Every small little hole,
They did not miss a single house,
That had a cellar below.

They searched and searched all the houses,
But the gunpowder lay hidden,
They finally found the powder,
A few minutes before the BOOM!

However, when Fawkes was caught,
The rest had run away,
They were to meet in a cottage,
Somewhere not that far away.

Guido Fawkes was taken to the tower,
And asked for a confession,
When Guido refused the offer,
He was throw into the tower and beaten.

When the conspirators found out,
About the failed plot,
They roared in fear and anguish,
And rode away to their secluded house.

Guido was badly tortured,
So badly, he couldn’t move,
For now he was resisting,
But would break very soon.

The conspirators meanwhile,
Had arrived and armed themselves,
However they were surrounded,
By guns held by men.

They, the conspirators i mean,
Were not going to surrender,
So the men, they built a bonfire,
And burnt the house from under.

The smoke forced the traitors,
To come out of their hole,
However they had weapons,
But were keen on escaping this hold.

They ran around,
Like crazy ducks searching for a gap,
However, the men had built a defence,
That would not be so easy to crack.

The men shot the heads of the traitors,
And killed them instantly,
They managed a two in one,
Of Thomas and Robert Catheby.

Meanwhile, in the tower of London,
Guido had finally broke,
He signed a confession with shaky hands,
His signature looked old.

The other traitors were rounded up,
And sentenced to death,
They were hung drawn and quartered,
In a grizzly blood fest.

This is what happened to the men,
Who betrayed the king, James the 1st,
He became more strict to the Catholics,
And killed them one by one.

However, some people think,
That Cecil, the minister, was involved,
He hated, loathed the Catholics,
And might have done this to the lot.

In the end, the King won,
And had them all killed,
To this they are all remembered,
On Guy Fawkes day.

They make a statue of that man,
And burn him in the night,
This is followed by fireworks,
That illuminate the treacherous night.

Remember, remember the 5th of November,
Gunpowder treason and plot,
I see no reason why the gunpowder treason,
Should ever be forgot.
