Remembering What Will Be

Tanka and Haiku Poems

Haiku Poetry
“Lemonade”
The
bright summer day
Selling
Lemonade, “Five Cents!”
But
nobody came.
“Fearless”
Running
in the grass
Barefoot,
Completely Fearless
Discover
Wonder
“Hope”
Curious
children
Brand
new eyes to see the world
There
might yet be hope
“Inevitable”
They
always grow up
Way too
fast for our liking
But
that’s what happens
“Remember”
All
together now
My
sisters playing outside
Oh, the
adventures!
Tanka Poetry
“Seven
A.M.”
Waiting
for the bus
It’s
winter and cold outside
My nose
is freezing
The bus
is loud and warm
Everyone
says it’s too cold
“Lullaby”
On my
mama’s lap
And she
is singing a song
‘Bout a
tired bear
His
tummy full of honey
We keep
rocking back and forth
“Halfway
Done”
The
mean girls at school
They
throw stony words at me
Nobody
listens
But
I’ll be gone pretty soon
And
then they will be sorry
“Ready”
I know
who I am
Confident
and happy, strong
Don’t
try to break me
Because
everything is great
And I’m
not afraid at all
“Going…Going…”
Ready
to run now
Finally
starting my life
I’m
excited to begin
This
new part of my journey
And oh,
I’m ready go!
Author’s Note:
This series
of Haiku and Tanka poetry is centered on the idea of growing up. It’s about how
there’s always that wish to stay the same, but excitement at the notion of
moving forward. A big piece of the theme is remembering what was and hope for
what can be. Not denying what hurt, but acknowledging what made me stronger.
